“For people to be able to go to a show and see Porter Wagoner dressed head to toe in this embroidered, rhinestone-encrusted suit, he was bringing an event to them,” Atwood said. “He wasn’t just bringing his music and his band.” The rhinestone cowboys wanted to bring showbiz to your town. Decades later, Atwood is helping Post Malone revive the popularity of eye-catching Western suits for an unexpected audience of hip-hop and pop music fans.
Malone, who sold more than 2 million copies of 2018 album “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” wore suits made and co-designed by Atwood at last year’s American Music Awards ceremony (where Malone collected two trophies) and last week’s Grammy Awards.
On Sunday, "Rockstar" singer Malone will be seen wearing a third Atwood creation on NBC’s “Elvis All-Star Tribute” special hosted by Blake Shelton.
The “Elvis” show commemorates Elvis Presley’s iconic 1968 TV “comeback special,” and Malone’s yellow suit incorporates the influence of 20th-century tailor Nudie Cohn as well as jumpsuits Presley wore from 1969 until his death in 1977.
Cohn, founder of Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors, made Presley’s famed gold lamé suit as well as a cowboy outfit for 1957 film "Loving You." Presley's jumpsuits were designed by Bill Belew. A jumpsuit nicknamed "American Eagle," seen on the 1973 “Aloha from Hawaii” TV special, inspired the images of feathers and talons embroidered on Malone’s yellow suit.
